Description
Work is underway on an $11 million renovation of the long-vacant Sun Theater on Grandel Square in St. Louis. The space is being renovated by The Lawrence Group as the performing arts space for the Grand Center Arts Academy. It is recognized by the LandmarksAssociation of St. Louis.
The Sun Theater stands across the street from the Grandell Theater. It was built as the Victoria in 1913. It has had a troubled history; its original purpose, to host plays in German, was rendered obsolete by anti-Germanic sentiment in World War I. A conversion to a movie palace was equally short lived, as it could not compete with the more ornate houses further south.
The building cycled through runs as a burlesque house, a jazz club, a movie theater, and a church; it was known at various times as the Liberty (a painted sign is still visible on the side wall), the World, the Lyn, and finally the Sun -- the latter because the sign was easily changed from "Lyn".
Dateline of the numerous name changes of this theatre:
1913 Victoria; 1918 Fox Liberty; 1924 Liberty/Liberty Music Hall; 1932 World; 1932 Liberty (again); 1932 World (again); 1936 Lotus Club; 1942 Hi-Hat Club; 1943 400 Club; 1950 Sun; 1950 Lyn.
